DVD Programme Four:

Chumphon, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao

Now is the time to come back and enjoy diving in Thailand!

Programme Four ...

The final programme on the DVD takes you to the beautiful islands in the southern Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan have been visited by tourists for many years and never fail to satisfy ... with powder white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters.

Each island has something different to offer ... Koh Tao is more laid back without much development it is the backpackers dream. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan have received a little more investment and developed over recent times but it is still possible to find your own secluded beach.

We show you each of the islands and the dive sites which can be found around each. Chumphon is around 520 km south of Bangkok but only 2 hours by boat from Koh Tao and is the eco tourist's dream.

Very little development has been made here and the forests and rivers inland are flowing with flora and fauna. Chumphon has a number of local islands which have very little diving over the years yet, which offer the diver the opportunity to see several marine critters like Sea Horses, Frog Fish and Cleaner Shrimps.

As shown in the DVD we think Chumphon and the Islands make excellent destinations for those people who want to learn to dive, with its combination of good visibility and shallower dive sites its the perfect place to gain your confidence.

The Dive Sites

Below, you find the description of dive sites, which we dived during the making of

the DVD "Discover Scuba Diving Thailand". Best diving time is October to May.

Chumphon

Hin Lak Ngam

Ngam Noi

Rarn Ped

This is a beautifully intact site with an abundance of soft and hard corals. Marine critters include Frogfish, Sea Horses, Pipefish. Depths around 5-20 metres (visibility of 5-15 metres). When visibility is good this sites offers huge numbers of schooling fish. This rocky islet juts ubove the surface only a metre or two but has been visited by the occasional whale shark.

Excellent site when good visibility to sight Stingrays, Blue Ringed Angel Fish and Banded Sea Snakes. The coral formations are made up usually of hard corals broken by areas of sea whips and leather corals. Depths of 5-15 metres (visibility 5-20 metres).

A nice limestone pinnacle site dropping to around 20 metres. Another area where its possible to see a whale shark. Generally known for the large numbers of Fusiliers, Damsel Fish and Butterfly Fish. Depths around 20 metres max (visibility 5-15 metres).

Rarn Gai

A hard coral and boulder dive site. Turtles are seen here on most dives as well as frog fish, Yellow Tail Barracuda. Depths 5-15 metres (visibility 5-10 metres).

Sail Rock

Japanese Gardens

Chumphon Pinnacle

Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui

The following sites are visited from dive centres on Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui.

They can also be visited as part of a liveaboard from Chumphon.

A huge rock which rises 30-40 feet above the water 17 km south east of Koh Tao. Sail Rock or Hin Bai is well known for "The Chimney", this is a swimthrough which starts are 18 metres and rises to an exit at 6 metres. A variety of soft and hard corals can be seen around the rock. There is a training platform which is used by divers at around 6 metres. Depths from 5-30 metres (visibility 5-25 metres). This is another good sight for spotting Whale Sharks at certain times of year.

Originally a site made up of lots of soft corals and schooling fish. Recently due to storms and dive traffic it is now more known for harder coral species however, you are still likely to see Blue Spotted Rays, Schooling Long Toms and Anemone Coral.

The main dive site of the area. Depths of 30 metres plus (visibility anywhere from 5-35 metres depending on time of year and weather conditions). Has been a magnet for visiting Whale Sharks although slightly less numbers these days. At the bottom on 30 metres you will be accompanied by Grey Reef Sharks, on one dive we saw eight all at the same time. Large Groupers also meander around the pinnacle. Try to get to the site early to see most marine life.

Other popular dive sites include: Hin Wong, Shark Island, South West Pinnacle, White Rock, Green Rock and Nang Yuan Cave.

Chumpon, Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao
